The 1912 World Series; the Hidden Rule

In the 1912 World Series, the Boston Red Sox beat the New York Giants four games to three (with one tie).

This dramatic series showcased great pitching from Christy Mathewson  and from Boston fireballler Smoky Joe Wood. Wood won two of his three starts and pitched in relief in the final game. In the deciding game, Boston rallied for two runs in the tenth inning thanks to two costly Giants fielding misplays.

Mathewson started three games, completed all three, compiled a 0.94 ERA for the Series, and got two losses and a no-decision for his efforts.

Nearly all of the games were close. Four games in this Series were decided by one run. A fifth ended in a tie. A sixth was decided by two runs. Game 7 was the only one with a margin greater than three runs. Two games, including the decisive Game 8, went to extra innings. In Games 1 and 3, the losing team had the tying and winning runs on base when the game ended.

The Impact of Mlb Spring Training on Florida’s Cities

More and more Major League Baseball teams are choosing areas in Florida to hold their spring training camps. This is done for several reasons. Due to the fact that the climate in Florida is very warm and very mild during the late winter/early spring months, a team from anywhere in the United States can start their spring training on time, and not have to deal with cold and snowy weather.

This allows teams to have the same advantage as every other team in the country. For instance, the Boston Red Sox cannot begin to train outside in Boston until late April, when the season opens. On the other hand, the Los Angeles Dodgers can train outside all year long. This factor contributes to the migration of many major league baseball teams to Florida to conduct their spring training.

The more teams that choose Florida for the site of their spring training, the more impact it has had on Florida’s cities. Over the past ten years, as the number

MLB Weekly Capsule

ST. PETERSBURG (5/3) – The Boston Red Sox can’t seem to find a way to stop their division rivals from Tampa Bay, and Sunday afternoon it was the Rays’ LF Carl Crawford that hurt them. Crawford was a masterful thief reaching base on all five at-bats, then stealing six bases with an effort that made it look easy. His accomplishment makes him the MLB leader with 17 stolen bases, and only the fourth player in the modern era to steal six in a single game. Eddie Collins did it twice for the Philadelphia Athletics in 1912, Otis Nixon stole six in 1991, and Eric Young in did it 1996. For the game, the Rays stole a club record eight bases en route to a 5-3 win at Tropicana Field.

CINCINNATI (5/6) – Cincinnati shortstop Paul Janish was called upon Wednesday night to do something he hasn’t done since college:

USMMA of Bellingham Announces Quarterly Community Blood Drives- Next Drive Scheduled for September

In light of the blood drive’s success, USMMA has announced that they will host quarterly blood drives, run by the American Red Cross, at their studio at 316 Hartford Ave.  The next blood drive will be held on September 3, 2009.

As a “thank you” to donors from the recent blood drive, USMMA offered one free week of Martial Arts or one free yoga class.  Donors also received a free box of chocolate dipped strawberries from Edible Arrangements and were entered into a drawing for a chance to win two Boston Red Sox Tickets and to be honored on the field as “Blood Donor of the Game”.

“According to the American Red Cross, every two seconds, someone in the U.S. needs blood, yet only five percent of the eligible population gives blood.  Our community blood drive was a great success.  And, since there is a significant and ongoing need for blood, we’ve decided to organize a quarterly blood drive with the Red Cross here at our

New York Times Cuts Jobs

The New York Times Co. (NYT – Snapshot Report) announced another set of cuts in its headcount amid the secular and cyclical slowdown in print advertising. The company plans to cut back newsroom staff by 8% or nearly 100 jobs by the end of the year through buyouts or layoffs.

Previously in 2008, the company had eliminated 100 newsroom jobs. Earlier this year, The Times announced a pay cut of 5%. The company, which is under serious financial pressure, has been trying all means to survive the worst recession.

The New York Times currently employs 1,250 editorial staff, which is significantly higher than other U.S. newspapers where the numbers are not more than 750.

Like The New York Times, other newspaper companies like Washington Post Co. (WPO – Analyst Report), Journal Communications (JRN – Snapshot Report), Gannet Co. (GCI – Snapshot Report) and McClatchy Co. (MNI – Snapshot Report) have long been grappling with the

Moseley was scheduled to fight Andre Berto on January 30, but due to the tragic earthquake that hit Haiti last week, Berto canceled the fight due to the fact that he lost a lot of loved ones and is not ready to fight at this time. If Mayweather and Moseley can agree on terms it will become the biggest upcoming fight in boxing today.

Former Miami Heat center Alonzo Mourning and current Heat star Dwayne Wade have teamed up to help raise money for the citizens effected by the devastating earthquake that just hit Haiti last week. So far through donations from fellow star athletes like Lebron James, Carmelo Anthony, Michael Beasley, Kevin Durant, and Chris Paul, they have raised over 0,000 and still looking to raise more.

Mlb Tickets – 2010 American League Predictions

Mlb Tickets – 2010 American League Predictions

Here is how I predict things will shape up in the American League in 2010.

East Champion – New York Yankees: The reigning champs return as the favorites in the AL East after a solid offseason.  The Yanks spent like crazy two offseasons ago, but were more fiscally responsible in 2010, landing players via trade and smaller free agent signings.  Curtis Granderson was a nice addition to the lineup and outfield, while Javier Vasquez could end up being the best third starter in the majors this season.  Andy Pettitte will give the rotation some stability and the Yanks have major upside in Phil Hughes.  With a stacked lineup, a top-tier starting rotation and a good bullpen, there’s no reason to think they won’t win the division.  MLB tickets tickets to see the Bronx Bombers should be as popular as ever in 2010.

Central Champion – Minnesota Twins: I don’t think the Twins will need a one-game playoff to win the division this season.  They locked up
