The Rain Maker Sports: Sports Bytes – June 4, 2010

Bud Selig made the right decision. When I first learned that Detroit Tigers pitcher Armando Gallaraga was denied a perfect game because of a blatantly errant call by umpire Jim Joyce, I immediately felt that the MLB Commissioner should overturn the mistake. But after listening to the arguments of those who felt otherwise, and remembering Game 6 of the 1985 World Series between the St. Louis Cardinals and the Kansas City Royals, I realized that Selig made the right move. In the 1985 World Series, the Cardinals were ahead 3-2 in games and leading 1-0 in the ninth inning of Game 6 when Royals utility player Jorge Orta hit a ground ball to 1B Jack Clark. Clark made the play and tossed it to pitcher Todd Worrell, who arrived at the first base bag in plenty of time. However, umpire Don Denkinger mistakenly called Orta safe. The Royals eventually scored two runs in that inning to win the game 2-1, and then destroyed the Cardinals in Game 7 (11-0) to win the Series. No change

Boston, a Bargain Travel Guide

Made famous by Revolutionary events, infamous by cold winters, and both by the World-Series winning Red Sox, Boston has its fair share of reasons to visit. With such a reputation, however, comes high prices, and it has become increasingly difficult to find bargain deals in the city. That is why we created a list of budget restaurants, bars and activities that both locals and tourists can use when going out in Boston. Spanning the unique Boston neighborhoods, we have suggestions whether you are with family, friends or single. We also provide ideas for dates that won’t break the bank – great especially for a first outing, yet perfect also for a change of pace in the old routine.

Restaurants

Grendel’s Den (89 Winthrop Street, Harvard Square) – Stop by for the happy hour food specials from 5-7:30pm and after 9:30pm at this popular Harvard Square bar. The entire menu (normally very reasonable) is half priced, giving the diner on a budget

2006 Anaheim Angels Preview

2005 Overview:

Mike Scioscia and his 2005 Anaheim Angels entered the new season ready to defend their 2004 American League West Title. Although the 2004 season ended in a disappointing 3 game ALDS sweep to the World Series Boston Red Sox, the Angels remained poised and confident they could return to the postseason once again. The Angels good fortunes continued in 2005 as they ended clinching the American League West with an impressive 95-67 record. Unfortunately, the 2005 postseason ended in 4 straight losses to the Chicago White Sox as the Angels were eliminated 4-1 in the American League Divisional Playoffs.

Lead by superstar Vladimir Guerrero (.317 32 108) the Angels starting lineup provided a balanced attack against the opposition in 2005. The new additions of Juan Rivera (.271 15 59) and shortstop Orlando Cabrera (.257 8 57) helped provide much better offensive stability as they joined outfielders Garret Anderson (.283 17 96) and catcher

Tigers Keep Winning And Now Get The Yankees In Motown!

The Detroit Tigers won another series this past weekend at the hands of a division rival in Cleveland and continue to own the best record in the majors at 35-15, but now they get the acid test!

They are about to throw a week long party in their house at Comerica Park and they have invited some very raucous folks in the name of the New York Yankees and the Boston Red Sox.

Any team that considers themselves a worthy contender in the American League realizes that they will at some point have to dispose of the perennial American East champions. With all due respect to the defending World Series champion Chicago White Sox, the Yanks and BoSox are the enemy.

After a consistent performance in the 2005 MLB season, the Atlanta Braves are poised to make a strong showing in 2006. The Braves finished the 2005 regular season with a .556 win average, placing them at the top of the National League East, which is where they have

Blue Jays World Series History

The Toronto Blue Jays have the distinction of being the first, and most likely being the only Canadian team to ever win baseball’s most coveted prize, the World Series championship.

Originally founded in 1977, the Toronto Blue Jays struggled like most expansion teams, taking seven full seasons to record their first .500+ winning percentage. Yet from there on out (1983) the Jays had at least a .500 winning percentage in every season up until the strike shortened 1994 campaign.

During this stretch of success the Jays battled their way to three playoff appearances; in 1985, 1989 & 1991. Unfortunately they fell short of reaching the finals in all three occasions. The year 1992 would be different.

Before getting into the actual series’ themselves, we’d have to be crazy to skip over the players themselves. The names on the rosters read like a who’s who for the late eighties and early nineties. Everyone on this list

All About World Series Programs

World Series programs are the most sought after collections in the history of sports memorabilia. These programs most often sell for at least a thousand dollars and most have attracted large sums. These programs are no more available and were officially abandoned in 1974 when only one official program was released for fall series. The programs are a rare commodity because every team used to publish one or two of their own every year.

In terms of monetary compensation, the classic World Series programs act as some of the finest memorabilia. The first World Series program of 1903 was originally priced at 10 cents but it can fetch over 000 in mint condition. Recent auctions have seen early 20th century World Series programs sold at an average of 00 and 00 for New York Giants and Boston Red Sox issued programs, respectively. The Chicago issued White Sox program of 1919 is famous for its throwing scandal that attracts over a couple of thousand dollars.
